Did You Know?

Telco speak includes numerous acronyms - 3G, MMS, EMS, WAP, EDGE, GPRS. Have you ever wondered what they mean, and how a mobile messaging service or application, a mobile bandwidth and a mobile network relate to each other?

Here, we attempt to simplify the technicalities to give you a basic understanding of mobile jargon and how they relate.

As can be seen from the two tables below, mobile bandwidth, mobile network and mobile messaging services are inter-reliant and dependent on one another to deliver quality mobile content to give mobile users the ultimate mobile experience.

Bandwidth Description Standard / Network Application / services
These were the analog cell phone standards that continued until they were replaced by 2G digital cellphones. - -
It cannot normally transfer data, such as email or software, other than the digital voice call itself, and basic ancillary data such as time and date. Nevertheless, SMS messaging is also available as a form of data transmission for some standards. Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) Short Messaging Service (SMS)
Provides services such as WAP and GPRS enabling mobile phones to send/receive picture message and access to certain websites. Colored screen with camera featured mobile phones were also introduced at this stage. General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)
This refers to systems which meet the requirements of EDGE systems but do not meet 3G requirements. General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) Enhanced Messaging Service (EMS) Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS)
3G services provide the ability to transfer both voice data (phone calls) and non-voice data (info download, exchanging email, and instant messaging). 3G protocol enables high speed connection (similar to broadband) to access Internet and video calls. Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) Video calls
The infrastructure and the terminals will have almost all the standards from 2G to 3G implemented. The infrastructure will however only be packet based, all-IP. The system will also serve as an open platform for new innovations. Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMax) High-definition TV

Saving Lives Through SMS Technology

Last March 2007, 220 Malaysians donated 171 pints of blood to the National Blood Bank in a blood donation campaign organised by the Lions & Leo Club of Petaling Jaya Metro.

MACROKIOSK, the official SMS service provider for this caring campaign, provided pro-bono SMS notification services to encourage public involvement. Instead of levying the usual SMS charges, MACROKIOSK provided the campaign with free SMS technological service and back-end support.

The campaign raised awareness of the many benefits associated with donating blood. And, donors took the chance to mingle and catch up with fellow residents, thereby strengthening community relations in the process. All in all, it was a positive step towards building a healthy nation
